The 29-year-old said that Kyrgios' insulting remark on Stan Wawrinka was completely unnecessary, news.com.au reports.
McEnroe said Kyrgios should look to Nadal as the standard for behaviour in the sport.
Earlier, Kyrgios was handed a suspended ban and a fine by the ATP Tour for his remark against Wawrinka during their recent Rogers Cup match in Montreal.
