An unbeaten 265 helped the visitors declare at 521 for 1. In reply, the hosts were 63 for 2, still 192 runs behind, with a day to go.
"Before this game, I decided to not play shots to balls well outside the off stump and the ploy worked for me," said Rahane.
"I had not been scoring runs this season. So, its very satisfying to get a big score."
Sahil Kukreja also stroked 122 while skipper Wasim Jaffer was unbeaten on 107.
With a day to go, Mumbai will be fancying their chances of an outright win today.
