Sir Alex Ferguson's side has received a fair amount of stick within certain sections of the media in recent times and the 1-0 loss to Burnley last month did little but to fan the flames of the champions' critics.
Since then, however, United have been in impressive form and currently sit at the summit of the Premier League following Saturday's triumph over Stoke City.
While the Red Devils may not have hit top gear at the moment, Rooney is adament that criticisms of the team have been way off the mark.
"Personally I think we came in for some unfair criticism at the start of the season because, although we weren't playing as well as we can do, we were still winning games," the England star was quoted as saying by the Press Association.
"Yes we lost to Burnley but we have won every game since and yet this week we still got criticised.
"Of course that's always going to happen with a club of this size but we bounced back really well, went
top of the league last weekend and are looking to carry on from there."
Many feared that the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid in the summer would have had significant ramifications on United's ability to find the net, although Rooney is delighted have seen the goals arriving from all areas of the pitch thus far this season.
"I think we are playing different football [without Ronaldo]," the 23-year-old added.
"Obviously last season the team was based a lot around Cristiano but this year there's a few more players chipping in with goals, which is great to see."
