The Indian ace, pitted against the second seeded Gregory Gaultier of France, went down 7-11 2-11 3-11. Ghosal simply failed to match up to his opponent's efficiency and lost the match rather tamely. Earlier, in the opening round of the competition, Ghosal had notched up a fighting 11-7 11-13 11-9 12-10 victory over Adrian Waller of England. Ghosal was the only Indian male in the main draw after qualifier Mahesh Mangaonkar had lost his match.
Two other Indians who had made a bid for the main draw but failed to make it were Harinder Pal Sandhu and Vikram Malhotra, both of whom lost in the second and final round of the qualification phase.
