Gundecha Education Academy’s (Kandivli) Suryansh Shedge made a dream Harris Shield debut, scoring a 98-ball 167 in the Harris Shield Plate Division inter-school cricket tournament at Azad Maidan on Thursday. The 12-year-old’s century helped the Kandivli school register a 359-run win over Shree Mumbadevi Vidya Niketan (Borivli).

Gundecha posted a mammoth total of 408-3 in the stipulated 45 overs. Dev Shah, who made 72 runs, ably supported Suryansh. Mumbadevi’s Aryan Sarangdhar bowled Suryansh out. The Class VII student’s knock comprised 24 boundaries. Later, Gundecha’s left-arm-spinner Anurag Mishra scalped five Mumbadevi wickets, including a hat-trick, while giving away 21 runs in eight overs as the opposition folded for 49 runs.

Suryansh lamented missing out on a double ton. "I was confident of scoring a century today. My only regret is that I got out before reaching the 200-run mark. I got out playing a stupid shot else I could have easily got to 200," said Suryansh, who is in his maiden year of inter-school cricket.

He added that despite the victory, the team needed to be focused. "This is a knock-out format and though we scored over 400 runs today, but it won’t be the same always. We need to still stay focused as we will face stronger teams in the next rounds," he added.

Gundecha coach Praful Naik said that though Suryansh is young, he isn’t scared to play against older boys. “Suryansh is a fearless player. It doesn’t matter who he is playing against. Playing at the U-16 level will give him experience and exposure.”
