Sahebjeet Singh Rance of Arya Vidya Mandir (Bandra) won two gold medals — both setting new meet records — in the 800m and 1500m event besides a silver medal in the 400m at the AISM Western Region inter-school athletics meet at Priyadarshini Park yesterday.

In the boys’ U-16 1500m event, Sahebjeet clinched gold clocking 4:23.4s, ahead of Bhushan Bist (5:06.5) and Vedant Shanbhag (5:08.3). He broke the existing record of 4:51:9s set by Tej Bid in 2012. In the 800m run, he clocked 2:05.0s to win gold, ahead of Deep Kishor Thajur (2:20.0) and Dhruv Khanduja (2:24:2s). Here too he broke one of Tej's records — 2:12.6s — set in the same year, 2012.
In the 400m run, the 15-year-old won a silver clocking 55.2 seconds, behind Sahib Singh of Jasudben ML School who clocked 54.8 seconds for gold.
Sahebjeet’s feat is special considering the class IX student switched from football to athletics only last year. “Till 2012, I played football. Last year, I took to athletics and won a bronze medal without any coaching at my very first DSO meet. That’s where my current coach Ravi Bagdi spotted me and took me under his wings,” said Sahebjeet, who won two gold medals (800m & 1500m) in the DSO event last month.
