Petr Cech leapt to the defence of Fernando Torres after the Spaniard endured another game to forget in his second appearance for the Blues in the west London derby against Fulham on Monday night

Petr Cech leapt to the defence of Fernando Torres after the Spaniard endured another game to forget in his second appearance for the Blues in the west London derby against Fulham on Monday night.

Torres has failed to make an impression for the Blues since his record-breaking 50 million pound move from Liverpool on transfer deadline day.

Cech told his club's official website: "I think he made very good movements throughout the 60 or 70 minutes he was on the pitch.u00a0 He found quite quickly the understanding with everybody.

"It wasn't to be to score a goal but it looks very promising."

And the Czech Republic star had the ideal vantage point from which to witness an outstanding full debut from 25 million pound man David Luiz, who also joined the Premier League champions on transfer deadline day.

Unlike Torres, Luiz seemingly could do no wrong last night ufffd until he conceded a soft stoppage-time penalty which Cech ultimately saved.

Cech described the 23-year-old defender as "brilliant", adding: "It just shows why Chelsea bought him because he really is a great addition to the squad."
