U-17 cricket: Father-son duo help Victoria beat Hume school

Victoria High School (Mahim) registered a 7-0 win over Hume High School (Tardeo) in the District Sports Office-organised Subroto Mukherjee boys’ U-17 knockout tournament at the MSSA ground, Azad Maidan yesterday.

The win though wouldn’t have been possible without the contribution of the coach/father-son duo of Anthony and Wilson Nadar. Wilson and Maurice Chettiar scored a hat-trick each in the win while Ronan Fernandes netted the other goal for the Mahim school. It was through Anthony’s guidance that the team thrashed the Tardeo side.

Wilson said that it isn’t easy for him to have his father as his coach. “He is a taskmaster. On the field, I am just another player for him. He scolds me for every mistake I make on the ground, but never appreciates me for scoring. At home, my father is like my friend. He pampers me a lot and appreciates every good deed,” said 15-year-old Wilson.

No favourites
Explaining why he prefers not to have any favourites on the field, Anthony said, “When I am on the ground, I need to teach the children the values of being one unit. Wilson is just one of the team members for me. At home, he means the world to me. I want him to a good human being first and footballer later,” he said.

Anthony praised the team’s performance considering that the school team practice together only once in a week. “The school doesn’t have a ground, so we practice every Thursday at Shivaji Park. Considering this, I feel participating in any tournament is an achievement. If they play well and achieve something, it is a bonus,” said the coach.
