It is a given that with 28 per cent GST slapped as sin tax on horse racing, there is zero sense in betting the favourite anymore. The new age punter in New India therefore must step out of his comfort zone, and look for odds and value for his bet.
One such opportunity is presented in the Season Opener Plate (Div II). Ameerah (Roderic O'Connor—My Lakshmi) from trainer Sunderji's yard made a stylish winning debut at Mumbai, and will most probably be installed as a hot, on-money favourite. By contrast, Smiles Of Fortune (Planetaire—Wonder Smile) from trainer Malesh Narredu's stables, who is still a maiden after five starts, may not have as many supporters, and therefore, will command relatively generous odds.
