In a sensational display of raw speed, six-year-old mare Esperanza, trained by Shazaan Shah and racing in the silks of Jayadev M Mody of the JM Livestock, bagged the mid-day Trophy (Class II; 1000m) at the Pune racetrack on Saturday. It was also a case of great resilience as Esperanza was coming out after a statutory, four-week ban from racing after bleeding in her last start on this track for which trainer Shazaan Shah must get full credit.

The race began with a bit of drama as Esperanza nearly stumbled out of the gates due to an awkward jump making her backers, who had supported her confidently despite the odds on the favourite, Midnight Express (NS Parmar up), shrinking to 10-7 on, thanks to an avalanche of betting as if her defeat were inconceivable. For a split second, it seemed Esperanza's chances were dashed, but the mare quickly recovered, surging ahead to dictate terms from the front. Ramswarup, riding with composure beyond his years, steered her well through the early stages, building a comfortable lead before turning for home.
