Operation Theatre closed as many doctors are on CWG duty

It's a ripple effect of the CWG. Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in northwest Delhi closed its Routine Operation Theatre on Monday due to shortage of medical staff and senior doctors. More than 30 physicians from the hospital have been deputed at various CWG venues.

"All the head of the departments have been sent for CWG work. This action was expected a long time back," said one of the head of the departments in the hospital on the condition of anonymity.

The institute has been receiving a large number of patients for the past many days. But due to shortage of doctors, the emergency and casualty wards are full with a large number of patients lined up for treatment.

"We have been coming to the hospital for the past four days but are going back without treatment. What is our fault if the number of doctors is inadequate?" asked Hari Lal, one of the patients admitted in the casualty ward.
Even nurses and other staff are worried over the issue.

"We are already working double shifts; we are giving our best. But if a patient wants to get treated, we are the secondary solution. Primarily, they need to get treatment from senior doctors," said one of the nurses on the condition of anonymity.

"Even patients are going to suffer because of such a decision. There are a large number of patients who have been allocated dates for surgeries, unfortunately. Now they will have to be cancelled," said another HOD of the hospital expressing her surprise over the issue.

Meanwhile, the report prepared by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) also reflects the lack of services being offered to patients.

Usually, almost 10 - 12 cases of dengue are reported by the hospital every day. Contrary to the trend, there were zero cases from the hospital on Monday.Delhi Health Minister Dr Kiran Walia was unavailable for comments.
