“Being a physically challenged cricketer, I know the hardships that para athletes have to go through in life. So, the lyrics came naturally to me. But composing the anthem was a challenge because I wanted it to have that punch. Music is like meditation and I hope the anthem I have prepared helps boost our athletes to excel in Tokyo,” said Sanjeev.

Physically challenged cricketer-cum-singer Sanjeev Singh was thrilled when he recently got a call from the Paralympics Committee of India (PCI) president Deepa Malik, requesting him to compose and sing an anthem to boost the morale of India’s contingent for the Tokyo Paralympics (August 24 to September 5).

Sanjeev, 29, whose left hand has been affected due to polio since he was two, is also a vocalist with a music band in Uttar Pradesh.

Physically Challenged Cricket Association of India (PCCAI) secretary Ravi Chauhan knew of Sanjeev’s active involvement in music and recommended him to Malik. Sanjeev immediately impressed Malik and was given the responsibility to prepare the anthem.

“I could not believe it when I was approached to sing the anthem. There are so many renowned artists, who could have done the job, but they chose me. It’s an absolute
honour to compose and sing this anthem,” Sanjeev told mid-day on Monday.

The anthem Karde kamal tu, ban ja misaal tu (work your wonder and become an example) will be officially released virtually today by union Sports Minister
Anurag Thakur.

Sanjeev took around 10 days to write the song and another six days to compose it.
