Shradul Mandave and Kunal Chonkar, both 14, combined effectively by scoring three goals apiece, which helped defending champions St Joseph’s HS (Wadala) clinch a narrow 9-8 win over Don Bosco International School (Matunga) in a hard-fought boys’ under-16 group match of MSSA inter-school handball tournament at Azad Maidan on Thursday.

As the match was drawing to a close and with the scoreboard reading eight-all, the Don Bosco lads launched a couple of raids towards the rival goal in search of the crucial winner. But, all their efforts were nullified by an alert St Joseph’s goalkeeper Rex Mathews, who made some timely saves. Having survived a series of close shaves, the St Joseph’s boys, through a last ditch effort from Shradul, managed to score the all-important goal which helped them snatch a tense, thrilling victory. Aaron Serrao, Nathan Barretto and Swastik Poojari scored a goal each in the Wadala schoolboys’ success.
