Belarusian Victoria Azarenka began her US Open campaign here in fine fashion with a straight-sets win over French Fiona Ferro on Sunday.

Azarenka, a three-time finalist at the Flushing Meadows here, beat Ferro  6-1, 6-2 in a lop-sided contest.

Azarenka, 34, mum to seven-year-old son Leo, was in the news for all the wrong reasons at Wimbledon recently. She was booed by members of the public when Ukrainian Elina Svitolina did not shake her hand after a match. The two-time Grand Slam champion will be hoping she does not have to bear any more after-shocks of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine in the year’s last Grand Slam.

On court though, the 18th seed had no trouble in dispatching everything that came her way off Ferro’s racquet. She was totally dominant winning as many as seven of her 11 break points and with a 69 per cent win percentage on her powerful first serve. Ferro,  26, on the other hand, managed to convert just two of seven  break points.

Meanwhile, 10th seed Karolina Muchova, 27,  was also in a dominant mood. The Czech tennis ace cruised past  Australian Storm Sanders in straight sets. Muchova won 6-4, 6-0.
