Thumri singer Dhanashree Pandit-Rai will unveil the many mysteries of the Indian raga at a classical music appreciation session

Think that classical music is only for the erudite few who can identify ragas? Acclaimed Thumri singer Dhanashree Pandit-Rai is going to burst that bubble at a Mumbai Local session titled That Which Pleases is a Raga.

"It's a myth that classical arts is only for a selected few. This makes it inaccessible. All one needs is a bit of guided listening; before they know it, they will be in the thick of it," says Rai.

At the session, Rai will take us on a journey through the ragas, sharing how they are created, the mystery behind their composition and how these are in fact connected to our everyday world — if only we knew how to recognise them.

"Raga is the soul centre of Indian classical music; it is what makes Indian music so special and sought after all over the world," says Rai.

The guided listening session will help understand ragas better, says Rai. "I want to see the pleasure on the faces of lay listeners as they discover and start identifying ragas, and that of music connoisseurs, who weren't aware of some of the finer points of the raga mystery and magic," she adds.
