While around the world, the "beardo-thon" has become a crucial part of the No Shave November movement, Mumbai is set to make its debut in this regard. The city will witness its first beardo-thon next week where both men and women are welcome to participate to support the cause of cancer awareness. The run that will start from Shivaji Park and culminate in Dadar, will have a five-kilometre and a 10-km stretch. Organised by the Bombay Beard Club and the Bharat Beard Club, the event has also tied up with Mumbai Runners, a community of runners in the city.

The history of No Shave November can be traced back to Australia, to the year 2004. A group of 30 men organised an event and grew moustaches for 30 days to raise awareness for prostate cancer and depression in men.

Nikhil Alag, who is a member of the Bombay Beard Club, says, "Our main aim behind the event is to support the cause of cancer and towards that end we are in talks with a few NGOs. The funds generated by the event will be donated for the cause." He adds, "We want everyone to participate, including women who can run to support the health of their father, husband, brother or boyfriend. And, it is not compulsory for men to have a beard. A clean shaven guy, or even someone with a light stubble can run. The point is garner maximum support for the cause," he adds.
