You’ve had it smooth, you’ve had it crunchy, and in chocolate flavour too. This version of peanut butter—gunpowder—blew our minds away

Food Review: Here is why gunpowder peanut butter is our new favourite

Peanut butter

Trying on a new flavour is always an adventurous job because one has no idea how it will turn out to be. A case in point is mayonnaise, which now seems to be available in previously unimaginable flavours but not everyone hits the nail on the head. Moreover, as a workout buff, this writer is picky about peanut butter, as it makes for the ideal pre-workout snack on slices of bread, and who wants to begin their day with an awful taste in their mouth?

This is why we approached gunpowder-flavoured peanut butter by Tooth Mountain with extreme apprehension. Turns out, we needn’t have. When you hear the word gunpowder, your thoughts need not wander too far from the podi chutneys ground in the kitchens of South India. You’re on the right track!

Gunpowder Peanut Butter masterfully combines the zesty punch of traditional lentil and spice condiment with the creamy goodness of peanut butter. Surprisingly, the fusion works seamlessly, and it is as good as biting into an idli with a generous (read overzealous) smearing of podi. We tried this with plain slices of brown bread, to our immense delight. Already, we’re drawing up a list of combos to try with this discovery: veggies such as cucumbers and tomatoes, a simple slice of cheese and a nice, fluffy omelette and idli too. Why not?

In addition to the Gunpowder flavour, Tooth Mountain also offers classic versions of the nut butter in smooth and crunchy textures, which were equally satisfying. Having sampled several brands, one develops a knack for gauging which one is over processed, and Tooth Mountain shines on this front. Their products taste refreshingly organic, and we found out why on their website. The homepage tells us the peanuts are sourced from the Khathiwadi-Bharuch region in Gujarat, and the products are bottled at the peak of their seasonal cycles.

When not assailing your taste buds with happiness, Tooth Mountain also offers farm stays at their resort in Karjat, where the produce is grown and sold. You can conveniently order their products through their website, and they’ll ship them to your doorstep, no matter where you are in the country.
