You can choose from a range of watch faces and customise the look of your watch as you please. The straps can also be interchanged by the user without any tool. While this sounds great on paper, the Fossil Gen 5E has some major missteps, which prevent it from being an ideal device.

Fossil Gen 5E

The Fossil Gen 5E is a great sounding device. It features a stainless steel case in two sizes: 42mm and 44mm. It has a 1.19-inch AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon wear 3100 chipset, Google Wear OS, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, heart rate monitor, 300 mAh battery, microphone, accelerometer, Gyroscope and a magnetic charging dock. All this for the price of Rs 18,495, which as far as smartwatches go, is respectable.

You can choose from a range of watch faces and customise the look of your watch as you please. The straps can also be interchanged by the user without any tool. While this sounds great on paper, the Fossil Gen 5E has some major missteps, which prevent it from being an ideal device.

For starters, the navigation on the Gen 5E is tedious and the information supplied to the user on the watch face is minimal—you have to use the app to dive deep. The battery lasts about an entire day, and it takes an hour to charge it up to full again. The watch is also heavy at around 120 gm. The screen is also not edge-to-edge; in fact, the bezel around the screen is thick and prominent.

The look and feel of the watch doesn’t make it comfortable to use, while swimming or sleeping, or even for extended periods of time. I don’t like Google Wear OS as well—it felt limiting in every way. For example, to get my heart rate, I have to navigate to the preinstalled - Cardiogram app. The other option would be to whip my phone out.

I strongly feel Fossil Gen 5E needs to go back to the drawing board. As it stands, there is not enough utility to justify the buying price, even though it is on the lower side.
