Alia Bhatt-starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi in trouble?

The trailer of the Alia Bhatt-starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi has irked a section of Kamathipura residents. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film features Bhatt as a commercial sex worker, running a brothel in the area. They termed the trailer as ‘a blatant misrepresentation’ and ‘an attempt to malign’ the history of the place. The statement added that people had taken great efforts to erase the social stigma’ attached to Kamathipura, but this film would prove to be ‘extremely damaging’.


Gangubai Kathiawadi stars Alia Bhatt in the title role. The story revolves around the life of Gangubai Kothewali, the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura, and is based on a chapter of Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai.

This is the first time that Bhansali directs Alia. The film is Bhansali's 10th directorial and is set to release on July 30. On the other hand, Alia Bhatt has launched her production house Eternal Sunshine Productions. She has posted her company's logo on Instagram along with the official announcement.
