Akshay Kumar's 'Boss' did decent business while 'Shahid' gradually picked up pace over the weekend at the box office

'Boss' rakes in Rs 39 crore in five days

So far, October hasn’t proved to be an exceptional month for Bollywood. With the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer 'Besharam' fizzling out sooner than expected, Akshay Kumar’s latest release came close to earning big bucks. However, going by the current figures, even the action masala film hasn’t capitalised on its mid-week release.

According to the trade, 'Boss' has garnered a net scale of Rs 39 crore in five days. Hitting the marquee on Wednesday, it made the most of Bakri Eid a national holiday with Rs 12.6 crore posted on the first day itself. But that figure remained unbeaten even on a Sunday, where it managed only Rs 7.45 crore.

Amod Mehra, trade analyst, feels cricket played spoilsport to some extent. “With high-octane matches going on between India and Australia, the figures were affected for sure. Having said that, a film that has to click will do somehow. When you open a film on a Wednesday, you are looking for additional boost. Rs 40 crore is a decent figure though,” adds Mehra.

Calling the first week collection of 'Boss' “not bad”, exhibitor Rajesh Thadani sounds optimistic about Hansal Mehta’s biopic. “Over the weekend, 'Shahid' made around Rs 2 crore. For a small-budget film, it’s not a terrible number although Friday proved to be dismal. With the kind of positive reviews it has garnered, it might do well over the coming week, thanks to word of mouth.”

George Clooney-Sandra Bullock starrer Gravity scored around Rs 7 crore encouraging for a 3D Hollywood import in the first week. Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks, is going strong as well, according to Mehra. On the coming Friday, there are about eight new releases. Will it be the case of too many cooks spoiling the broth? We’ll have to wait and watch.u00a0
