Get music director Anu Malik reminiscing on his three decades in the film industry, and there is no stopping him. As an impressionable teenager, he found music in the flower power age, the serenity of the beaches and the empty roads.
With a big harmonium tucked under his arm and even bigger dreams in his head, he would walk long stretches to reach the recording studios. He now drives a swanky BMW S6 and his commitment to work and his passion for music haven't changed much, although he's changed as a person. Anu, who is busy with projects like Murder 2, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Toonpur ka Superrhero and others, looks back:
A different tune
A lot has changed over the years. Music was purer back thenu00a0-- there were no camps and no ulterior motives. If you had talent, you would find work. 
Now the 'why' word has started determining thingsu00a0-- why is a certain director hiring or firing you, why are you on X's camp etc.
But even after all these years, I've learnt to be in the industry, while being out of it. If you have no friends, you won't have any enemies they say. I couldn't agree more.
It doesn't affect me if I'm not called to a party or don't win an award. I guess if you have no expectations, you won't get hurt. Earlier I would feel bad, but now I have well passed that stage. I know that whether you love me or hate me, you can't ignore me.

My work and my frankness make people take notice of me. I speak my mindu00a0-- not just on reality shows, but otherwise also.
The show producers would often tell me to tone down my comments, but once the camera started rolling I would again be myself. And while the audiences appreciated that, I'm not sure if people in the industry did. They expect you to be a yes man, but I can't do that.
I have no qualms telling a director that I don't like his script. On the flip side, I'm quite generous with my praises too. I'm not one to stay quiet, I think I would have made a good cop.
Top cop
In fact I even cleared my IAS exams in my younger days. But just then I got a break in the music industry and I never looked back. However, I still continue to be a diehard Mumbai police fan. Even today, when I see traffic cops, I stop my car and chat with them, telling them that they're doing a great job.
I think I would have done well as an IAS officer because our country needs outspoken leaders. But I have no regretsu00a0-- I am happy to be where I am.
