Adrian shocked, WSH clueless after drug test report

Former India goalkeeper Adrian D’Souza is going through one of the worst phases in his life. First, he was unceremoniously dropped from the probables of the Indian team.u00a0u00a0Then, his hopes of trying to prove himself to his detractors by successfully leading World Series Hockey (WSH) outfit Mumbai Marines, suffered a blow as his team finished last in the inaugural multi-million dollar eight-team franchise-based league.

And as if that was not enough, yesterday a NADA report claimed that the Mumbai Marines ’keeper has tested positive for a banned substance in tests conducted during the WSH.u00a0According to the NADA report, Adrian’s ‘A’ sample (code 2217617) collected on March 21 was found to have “higher concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (Metabolite of Marijuana) Cannabinoids”.

A NADA official said that the player would now be required to attend the ‘B’ sample test and also clarified that the concerned drug is not a performance enhancing drug.u00a0WSH officials meanwhile, were stunned on learning about Adrian’s dope charge from the media. “We are clueless about this (Adrian’s dope test failure). We have not yet received any official intimation from the authorities concerned (NADA). According to media reports, the NADA document is dated April 11, which means a good 48 hours have passed since the incident, so it’s surprising that we are yet to receive anyu00a0official document regarding this. Only after we receive theu00a0document can we plan any further course of action,” a WSH source told MiD DAY.

Adrian meanwhile, did not accept any calls throughout the day. However, a source close to the player told MiD DAY that he was “absolutely distraught” at the news. “Adrian is shocked... ‘is this some kind of a joke?’ was his first reaction. He will only comment after discussing the issue with WSH’s organisers and the Indian Hockey Federation,” said the source.u00a0
