Composer Jasleen Royal on how she handpicked amateur artistes for Hichki song

Jasleen Royal, who has composed the soundtrack of Rani Mukerji's Hichki, says the track, Madamji Go Easy, holds a special place in her discography as it helped her introduce four new talents to Bollywood. The music director handpicked four rappers from Dharavi - David Klyton, Yogesh Kurme, Siddesh Jammi and Abhishek Kurme - for the track that also features Benny Dayal's vocals.
"I came across the Dharavi boys while researching for the soundtrack. While David has done the Tamil rap, Yogesh and Siddesh have provided the additional vocals. Abhishek has done the cough beat boxing," Royal tells mid-day. During the making of the track, Royal was impressed with the confidence of the amateur rappers. "They were damn quick; they didn't have any apprehensions. Their energy was infectious."

The situation-based song sees the school kids playing pranks on Mukerji's Naina, their teacher. With quirky lyrics that go 'Vasco Da Gama, Columbus Ka Mama, Ghar Na Thikana, Tiffin Se Khana', the musician says she had to "travel back to school in my mind to crack this." Royal also incorporated her trademark folk sounds in the number that will release later this week. "We used a lot of dhol and tasha sounds to give the song a rasta [street] feel."
