It's one thing to play a character, and quite another to meet the character face-to-face. Actor Michelle Yeoh who essays the role of Aung San Suu Kyi in an upcoming film, couldn't have been happier to meet the Burmese leader.
While several crew members applied for a visa to enter Burma, only Michelle got a green light from the Burmese government, albeit for only 24 hours.
She tells CS, "They all envied me and at the same time wondered why I'd been granted a visa. Once in Burma I went to visit Suu Kyi and the first thing that struck me was that there were books everywhere in the house.
I knew she was an avid reader because I had done research on her, but one look at her house and I knew that books were also her best companions. They were not only the source of her information and inspiration, but they also kept her sane. And they helped her to keep fighting.
The encounter with Suu Kyi was like a moment out of time. As soon as I saw her, I felt her warmth and generosity."
And Michelle wasn't too surprised by her rather petite frame. She says, "No matter how petite she might look, she exudes amazing strength. I felt like I already knew her, like she was an old friend." Well Michelle, we hope you stay friends even after the release ofu00a0the film.
