Omar Abdullah has lashed out at trolls for poking fun at Bollywood couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan for naming their newly-born son Taimur Ali Khan Pataudi.

The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister said that it's the right of the parents to decide the name of their baby and the opinion of the rest doesn't matter.

After Saif and Kareena announced their son's name as Taimur Ali Khan Pataudi, Twitterati went on to troll the couple and the name. They questioned why they named their son after 'the Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur'.

Taimur (or Timur) translates to 'iron'. He was a 14th century Turco-Mongol ruler and Mughal dynasty founder, Babur's ancestor. His ambition was to rebuild the empire of Genghis Khan, who had died a century prior, and his conquests included large parts of Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Syria, and Delhi.

A promoter of arts and literature, he is behind the stunning city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan. History books remember him as the plunderer who razed cities — possibly one reason why some Twitter users reacted to the news with expected fanaticism.

One Twitter user wrote, "Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan naming their child Taimur is equivalent to Europeans naming their children Hitler." Another said, "Taimur was a looter who killed over one lakh Hindus in India. Arabic name to prove themselves real Muslim."

Omar Abdullah hit back at trolls on Tuesday night and wrote, "The only people who get to decide a baby's name are the parents of said baby and the ones they ask. Why should opinion of the rest matter?"

He further tweeted, "So congrats to Saif and Kareena and a long happy life to their baby son. May Taimur Ali Khan have a happy and healthy life."

At 7.30 am on Tuesday, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan welcomed their first child, a baby boy. Kareena opted for a natural delivery, supervised by legendary Mumbai gynaecologist, Dr Rustom Soonawala and his team at Breach Candy hospital. The doctor is also the one to have brought into the world Kareena, sister Karisma and cousin Ranbir.
