This movie based on a novel by W. Bruce Cameron, serves up four chapters of reincarnated lives of a dog named Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad) who dies and keeps coming back as a different breed and sometimes a different sex, till he meets up with his aged and lonely first master, Ethan (Dennis Quaid) and does the happily ever after thingy that movies specialise in.
This may not be 'Marley & Me' but it's an interesting enough way of telling a story about a dog's unconditional love for his human master. The bottom-line here is that the dog always strives to make his master happy even when he/she is the grumpy, unemotional or careless type.
Director Lasse Hallstrom tries not to heap on the sentiment but the subject is such that doggie lovers are bound to be affected. The emotions will in all probability get worked up as you sit through several Doggy-lifetimes before getting to the purpose. Bailey and his several avatars consistently exhibit familiar mannerisms and tricks so connecting the dots is not too difficult- especially as he tries to find his way back to Ethan (Bryce Gheisar, K. J. Apa or Dennis Quaid), an owner he was especially close to.
Along the way, though, he has various other owners, saves people from a burning house, Plunges into raging waters to keep a child from drowning and even manages to nudge Ethan's old love into a revisit.
The TMZ video leak and PETA's objections are not likely to dent the enthusiasm of dog lovers who have been in eager anticipation for this kind of pet haven. This may not be amongst the best movies on dogs but it certainly gets you into the senti mood quick enough!
