The film was scheduled to screen at Landmark's Sunshine cinema but the theatre owners decided not to go ahead with the premiere.

The cancellation comes after the hackers, calling themselves Guardians of Peace, released more data where they invoked the September 11, 2011 terror attacks in emails to reporters, reported People magazine.

Sony told the theatre owners that it would move forward with the film but the exhibitors were free to decide not to show the film if they chose.

On Tuesday evening, Carmike Cinemas also decided to cancel its screenings of the film. The story of 'The Interview' revolves around a plot to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The FBI is investigating the cyber attack that has led to the leak of massive data from the studio's computers, including unreleased films, payment of the actors and private emails of Sony bosses.
