Veteran Marathi actress Smita Talwalkar passed away Wednesday morning, said a spokesperson of Jaslok Hospital where she was being treated for ovarian cancer.

"She passed away today at 2.30 a.m in the hospital," Jaslok Hospital CEO Tarang Gianchandani told IANS.

Murlidhar Kamat, who was treating the actress, told IANS: "She had cancer of the ovaries which was treated six years ago. That time, the disease was in the advanced stage. We managed to tackle it in the most capable way, following which she was treated for chemotherapy."

"It recurred after sometime and she was treated again. She responded quite well and she faced this disease with great courage. Yesterday she was very serious and this morning she passed away."

Smita Talwalkar started her acting career in 1986, featuring in 'Tu Saubhagyavati Ho'. She also turned producer for films and TV series and had directed one film as well.

As an actress, she was seen in movies like 'Chaukat Raja', 'Checkmate', 'Ek Hoti Wadi', 'Janma' and 'Prem Mhanje Prem Mhanje Prem Asta'.
