Fans of Suriya die by electrocution on his birthday, superstar promises help to families

Suriya

Actor Suriya turned a year older on July 24. The Tamil superstar who enjoys a massive fan following was showered with wishes from fans across the country. Some fans had also organised on ground celebration to mark the 48th birthday of their favourite star. However, in a tragic incident, two of his fans died by electrocution while they were hanging a birthday banner.

Two second-year engineering college students named Nakka Venkatesh and Poluri Sai from a private college in Andhra Pradesh were electrocuted when they were putting up a banner on Suriya's birthday in Mopulavaripalem village of Palnadu district in Andhra Pradesh. According to ANI, the two students were trying to install a banner of Tamil actor Suriya, and the flex banner’s iron rod came in contact with an overhead electric wire, which killed them both on the spot.

Actor Suriya who was made aware of the unfortunate incident contacted the families of the deceased on his birthday and expressed his condolence. He spoke to the families via video call and assured that he will help the grieving families. The video of the family talking to Suriya has been shared on social media.

Speaking to ANI, Ananya, the sister of Poluri Sai, said that the college should take responsibility for the deaths as they have failed to protect and monitor the students, who were living in the campus hostel. She was quoted as saying, “College is responsible for my brother’s death. We are paying fees to the college. Before joining the college they assured us that students would be secured and monitored, but, the college is not protecting and monitoring the students in the hostel. We are daily labours. We struggle a lot to pay college fees, striving for a good life for my brother. It’s an awful incident that happened.”

This is not the first time that a fan has died by electrocution while arranging for birthday festivities of their favourite stars. In 2020, three fans of Telugu star Pawan Kalyan died while putting up a birthday banner for the star. The fans came in contact with a live electric wire while installing a banner.
