Most shows on Indian television start on a promising note but gradually become predictable and unexciting. We take a look at daily soaps that we wish not to see next year onwards

These long-running TV shows need to go off-air

They say all good things must come to an end. We say bad and blah things must end sooner. But, it is a sad reality that many Indian television soaps, which are weapons of mass torture masquerading as entertainment, continue well beyond their expiry date. All this, especially when reality shows and limited episode series are increasingly proving to be the viewers' choice.

Moreover, heartwarming stories from across the border — 'Zindagi Gulzar Hai' and 'Aunn Zara', to name a few — are giving tough competition to Indian shows that offer a hugely unappetising platter of unconvincing stories.

Some of the longest running shows on different channels are resorting to the same old tried and tested twists, kitchen counter politics and time leaps — even though many of them started on a promising note.

As the new year nears and it's time to make way for new beginnings, hitlist draws up a list of six small screen shows that we hope not to see anymore...

'Ek Veer Ki Ardaas... Veera'
Ek Veer Ki Ardaas... Veera

Started: 2012
It's time to go: The daily soap started by showing a cute bond between a little boy and his even littler half-sister, their possessiveness and protectiveness towards each other. After a time leap, the grown up brother-sister duo expectedly find out that they are not real siblings but continue to stand by each other. But, the story gradually became a routine tale of how they fight against all odds and try fulfill everyone's wish. Blah! The grapevine suggests curtains will come down on the show soon. We are so hoping for that to happen.

'Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon'
Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon

Started: 2011
It's time to go: After the huge success of season one that ended in 2012, the second season of the show started the very next year and met with great popularity. The plotwas based on the concept of 'opposites attract'. But then the current track is nothing different from the original one — how the girl realises that her husband has a heart of gold and goes all out to solve never-ending problems in their relationship and family.

'Saath Nibhana Sathiya'
Saath Nibhana Sathiya

Started: 2010
It's time to go: The story of two cousins — Gopi and Rashi — who are complete opposites, the former being an innocent, illiterate girl and the latter, selfish and greedy. They get married into the same family and Rashi tries to make Gopi's life miserable. After a time leap, Gopi becomes a teacher and is separated from her family only to be reunited later. Predictably, her cousin again starts creating trouble for her. The makers should come up with more interesting angles or just wrap up the show at the earliest.

'Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai'
Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai

Started: 2009
It's time to go: It has been running for five years (we wonder how) but has barely made any substantial progress in terms of its story. The concept was simple — a couple falling in love post marriage. It also focussed the young bahu taking time to adjust with her new, big family and draws support from her husband in doing so. The show has seen a generation leap where the lead couple has become parents but don't seem to outgrow the premise of encountering basic family problems.

'Balika Vadhu'
Balika Vadhu

Started: 2008
It's time to go: The story of child marriage instantly struck a chord with the audience and continued with its good run when it first took a time leap and introduced grown-up lead actors. The show looked promising and did take up issues such as widow remarriage, forced marriage, adult education, lack of medical facilities in villages and so on. However, over the years, the show has become monotonous and it is high time that they said goodbye to Indian audiences. Pretty please!

'Supercops vs Supervillains'
Supercops vs Supervillains

Started: 2012
It's time to go: There is no dearth of crime shows on television and it is now becoming an overdose for the audience— although the first season of the show 'Hum Ne Li Hai Shapath' (2012-2013) was presented well. However, in the second season, which started soon after the first one ended, the makers went overboard showing cops fighting ugly looking superhumans in unrealistic, illogical situations. It can easily make way for another show that is more palatable to viewers.
