Ex-SHM member returns for solo act with DLDK India
Three years ago, when EDM supergroup Swedish House Mafia announced that they were disbanding, one band member was in the throes of uncertainty. While Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso didn’t break away from the A-team and released several hit singles together, DJ and music producer Steve Angello, who had come clean of his association with the band, was still struggling to make a mark for himself. It would take him two long years before he released his album Wild Youth, and broke into the dance music scene again.

Now, as Angello returns to perform in Mumbai — his last time was with SHM in 2013 — at the Indian installment of Don’t Let Daddy Know, the artiste speaks excitedly about bringing a whole new sound from his latest release, for audiences in India.
“Wild Youth was a product of all the excerpts I drew while growing up,” says Angello. “I have poured out my heart about all the experiences I had back then. All the songs and all the lyrics will tell you my personal story…the riots that me and my neighbourhood kids were a part of, and how we were like wildflowers, not giving a damn about the happenings around us. I don’t feel that the youth had a voice back then, not saying that they have one now. I think I wanted to raise this voice. This is what Wild Youth is all about,” Angello adds.
But even as Angello made a mark for himself with Wild Youth, and found himself room in the BBC Radio 1 Hall of Fame last year, re-writing a solo career didn’t come easy. “It is a little trying since you go a different way. The transition wasn’t smooth to be honest, but I have adapted quite well. I always believe that normal is monotonous and I tried to break out the monotony and challenged myself with this album of mine.”
Speaking about the current dance music scene, Angello feels there is a lack of creativity in the field.
“I think it’s really important for dance music to rethink instead of repeating itself. But me going on a rant about dance music isn’t going to change anything. I’d rather put my head down and release music that has substance,” says the Swedish artiste.
At DLDK India, Angello will give dance music enthusiasts a taste of his innovation. “Heads up to my fans, be prepared for one big party,” he says.
