Space is an important aspect of most creative arts. It is used in art, design, film and theatre. A lecture this week titled Theatre in Cinema, will see two leading names, Ketan Mehta and Sunil Shanbag, discuss space and its various facets in their work. Mehta is a film director, who has also directed documentaries and television serials. Shanbag is Indian theatre director, screenwriter and documentary film-maker. The event has been organised by SPADE, a non-profit organisation dedicated to design.

"The lecture will look at space and light and how cinema and theatre negotiate and work with these elements using different narratives and connotations. The speakers are experts in their field, who will talk about the processes that they undergo in their projects. Ketan treats art differently and all his works have a moving message; Sunil has an interesting approach to theatre, communication and performance," says Samira Rathod, architect and editor-founder, SPADE.

The event will be more of an illustrated talk, says Shanbag. "We will be showing a few examples of our work. I will bring along photographs of a few of my plays," he says, adding that he is looking forward to reconnecting with Mehta and discussing the commonalities and differences between cinema and theatre. "I'm interested in space metaphorically - what kind of space, cultural and not physical, is actually given to the performing arts in India and in the city."

Senior arts writer and founder of the performing arts company First Edition Arts, Devina Dutt, will moderate the lecture. Savor, the gourmet subscription service, has curated a special menu for the evening.

SPADE is an organisation that curates seminars, makes films, and publishes books. Their latest activity is this six-part lecture series, on the theme, 'Where the Real World Lies'. This is the second chapter of the series; the first was called Process Projects and dealt with how filmmakers, artists and architects worked with processes in their projects. "We do activities that delve into the idea of architecture and design in India. We are now doing a lecture series because we believe it is only through this dissemination of ideas and conversations with people from various fields that you evolve into a design-thinking mind," she says.

The next talk, in May, is based around an exhibition on landscape design in India called Tracing Narratives. "It will focus on how people react to landscape as art in a public space," adds Rathod.
