Screening: Watch 9 adventure film shorts from around the world

Every year in November, adventure film-makers and writers from across the world gather in Banff, a small village in Alberta, Canada, to share and catch the latest films and books on all things adventure. From minute-long short films to documentaries and movies, the Banff Mountain and Book Festival screens the best of adventure films from around the world over a period of eight days. It then travels across the world, screening a selection of titles.

Mumbai will be screening nine films from the 2015 edition of the festival this week at the Himalayan Club. On offer is Reel Rock 10: A Line Across the Sky, a 40-minute adventure story of the mountaineering duo Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold as they complete the first climb of the iconic Fitz Traverse in Patagonia (South America) in five days. Winner of the Best Film (Climbing) at the festival, it captures the duo’s ascent, celebrating the iconic skyline of Cerro Fitz Roy and its six satellite peaks, spanning four miles and 13,000 ft across snow and ice-covered rock, with epic route finding and endless rappelling.

There’s also the minute-long short film, Nature Rx, which talks about how nature is the best stress-buster. The Search of Freedom talks about adventure sports. Then there’s  Will Sutton: Homefree, a four-minute short  that features parkour athlete, Will Sutton in a unique journey across his homeland, the Isle of Man.

“Banff is a major event in the world of adventure, and is a great platform to create awareness about nature, mountaineering and adventure,” says Divyesh Muni, vice-president, Himalayan Club, adding, “The festival offers 150-minute screening to all its member clubs across the world. And after careful review, we zeroed in on nine films for the evening.”

Muni says, after Mumbai, the festival will head to Ahmedabad (April 3), Kolkata (April 9), Pune (April 10), Delhi (April 16), Bangalore (April 23), Vadodara (April 24) and Nashik (May 15).
