Typically, a discarded car or cycle tyre is viewed as a piece of junk. However, these can be remodelled into quirky furniture and home décor pieces, as 25-year-old Mumbai-based artisan Disha Sheth has gone ahead and done.

From up-cycling tyres into poufs and swings to converting cycle rims into chandeliers, a centre table or even a wall sconce, the young entrepreneur has created interesting products that are sold via the Facebook page of her company, Bylanes Of India. Besides selling her designs, she also curates handicrafts and jewellery created by artisans from across India.

“Bylanes of India was started with the need to surround myself with all things beautiful created by Indian artisans who I believe in or products designed by me. Handi-crafts are sourced from Gujarat and Karna-taka, while some clay and cloth pieces are made by artisans at Mira Road,” informs Sheth.

While the handicraft pieces are priced at Rs 120 onwards, the chandeliers cost Rs 3,500 and the swings start at Rs 4,000. According to Sheth, the materials are sourced locally from junkyards and shops.

Each furniture piece takes four days to complete and Sheth paints it herself. “We also customise furniture pieces by painting them with names or favourite themes that make for good gifting options,” sums up Sheth.
