Guitarist Rhythm Shaw, who won the All India Finger-Style Guitar Competition 2014 when he was a teenager, may not hold the child prodigy designation anymore, but the 21-year-old is improving his game every day by playing with different musicians. Shaw is set to perform conventional jazz with a trio named Orjazzmic, for the first time at a concert.
"I have played many styles, but never done something like this before. My band [Rhythm] has more of a rock sound with elements of jazz. I wanted to improve my craft playing jazz standards with experienced musicians," says Shaw, who will be accompanied by Gino Banks (drums) and Anurag Naidu (keys).

Shaw, who cut his debut album, Opening Act in 2015, loves challenges and doesn’t mind changing tones or styles. "I keep changing my guitars and amps [during gigs] too. I have to abide by the song’s demand. Growth can be achieved only by playing multiple genres as it makes you practise a lot more than you would otherwise," he says, adding, "When you are playing rock, you cannot include jazz lines. An artiste needs to be orthodox when approaching pure jazz. I’m sure Anurag will bring out a new side to me."
Banks has been drumming up a storm to Shaw’s tunes for over a year and the duo share dynamic chemistry. "We are on the same page. We don’t even need to talk before playing. We just start and it takes its course. I have rehearsed, jammed and hung out with Gino the most," he says, adding, "I first met him at a concert in Kolkata in 2015. Despite being a shy kid, I went up to him and said that I wanted to play with him. He said he had downloaded my album and would love to play with me too. It was a fan boy moment."
