Epson EH-TW5200 is a good home entertainment projector with a compact build and smooth design for under R1 lakh.
The EH-TW5200 home entertainment projector from Epson is a sub-1 lakh rupee device aimed at ‘budget’ customers — guess that’s how they define ‘lower end of the market’ in the projector world these days. It’s nice and portable, sporting a compact form factor, and comes with all the bells and whistles expected off a self-respecting multimedia entertainment projector, including 3D support.

The Epson projector sports a compact build and smooth design. For a home theater projector, with built-in speakers and an exhaustive array of features, the EH-TW5200 is quite portable at 2.8 kg and very easy to lug around. What’s more, its white enamel shell with a glossy piano finish makes it appealing on the eye — fingerprint smudges aren’t at all visible, which is nice. The projector’s plastic exterior feels well put together, there aren’t many moving parts, and the build is very good — even the Epson EH-TW5200’s adjustable back stands are nice and solid. The only minor exception being the projector’s front stand, which isn’t as well-built as its hind legs.
In terms of port placements, all the connectivity options are relegated to the EH-TW5200’s back panel - quite convenient and easy to remember. There are sliders to open and shut the Epson EH-TW5200’s lens cover and adjust its keystone, while the lens has manually adjustable focus and zoom ring. The projector’s front grille is its main heat vent and while it isn’t noisy, it does heat up quite a bit - which can be uncomfortable on touch at times.
If there’s one thing the Epson EH-TW5200 has in abundance is its wide array of features. Sporting 3LCD technology, the projector bundles in two HDMI ports — one of which supports MHL, a feature that allows you to hook up and beam content from a supported smartphone or tablet. The TW5200 also sports active shutter full-HD 3D playback (but doesn’t bundle any glasses) out of the box, and its menu feature list goes on — notable features include picture preset mode, hue, saturation and brightness adjustments, even individual colour adjustments which is cool.
In terms of performance, we found the projector to be quite bright and sharp, displaying a crisp, well-defined image on a white screen in a completely dark room and a moderately lit room — even towards the edge of the image which is commendable. Watching both Full HD 1080p movies and high bit-rate Blu-ray rips is handled very well by the projector, with absolutely no ghosting or visible moire, and impeccable colour consistency. Its inbuilt speakers aren’t very loud, however. Text readability is also very good on the Epson TW5200, meaning it can be used for showcasing presentations inside a boardroom as well. The bundled remote control lets you access a lot of one-click features conveniently. We wish the projector ran a bit cooler, but that’s about the only serious complaint we have from it.
This is well worth the money if you’re in the market for a portable but feature-rich home entertainment projector with 3D support. You won’t be disappointed.
