The mela is basically a fundraiser. With the funds we raise, we will buy sound equipment for our music community," says Barbara Leivang, a member of the community. "This mela has drawn people of all faiths to the church. Many of our friends and local people have volunteered their services and they also ensure that the celebrations go on without a hitch," adds Barbara.
The main attraction of the mela is the delicious food. There is a wide variety with food stalls from different parts of the country and even outside. There will be food from Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya and even Guatemala.
"Mostly it's us doing all the work. We have church members from all over the country but most of us hail from the northeast. So we are taking care of the food stalls from Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya. A Guatemala food stall will be put up by a family from Guatemala who come to our church. The Red Moon Bakery stall will be set up by a Canadian couple.
And then there will be a barbecue and a 'do it yourself' doughnut bar," says Barbara. Another big pull of the mela is the live performance by the KIC music band. They will play contemporary Western music. Listeners can also dedicate songs to their loved ones.
Not just food and music, there is something for shopaholics too. NGOs will be setting up stalls. There will be leather bags and stone jewellery. Yet another NGO will sell ensembles including Westernwear. So be there tomorrow as this is not a celebration that deserves to be missed.
