A photography exhibition will pay tribute to the photojournalist TS Satyan with a selection of his works on common people

Mysore born and Padma Shri awardee (1977) the late photojournalist TS Satyan has told many stories through the frames he captured for nearly five decades of his work of both the celebrated and the uncelebrated. While the celebrity clicks took away quite a lot of the attention, an exhibition titled Recorder of Life, Beauty and Truth a second in a series by Tasveer is set to move you to the deepest and most basic emotions. Curated by Abhishesk Poddar and co-curated by Kaajjal Guptaa, the exhibition is the first one being presented after the death of this well-known photographer in December 2009.

Gupta, the co-curator of the exhibition describes Satyan as one of the greatest and first photojournalists in the country and feels that his work is iconic and belongs to the classic category. She says, "He did not get enough recognition while he was alive. We wanted to put together an exhibition that reflects his ideology and do something that he would have liked," she adds.

The photographs which have been collected from different stages of his work spanning his career take a peek into the lives of ordinary people in public and private spaces including religious spots. While on one side you will see children looking out of a window and nuns teaching kids on the other side there are snapshots of pandits walking back after the puja, a devotee at the feet of the Sharavanbelagola statue and a man stepping out of the water at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

"He was known to be a people's person and once when asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, 'As an unostentatious person who loved people and remained humble'. There are no big names in this selection. It is about his work," Gupta tells us.

Talking about how these images, especially the old ones will still strike a chord among viewers, Gupta says, "For a common man daily experiences have not changed. We still see glimpses of nuns teaching children. We identify with something like this from the core of our heart and would want to capture it as it passes by."
