Four reasons Michelle Obama makes the forties fearless

The First Lady of the United states turns Forty-seven today. Here's a shout out to the woman who brought colour and vibrance to The White House, as well as hope to millions around the world

She stands beside (and not behind) her man

We like that America's First Lady has an opinion, and she's not shy to express it. Her support of women's rights advocates, families engaged in military service, and efforts to eradicate childhood obesity and promote organic food, frame her as an individual in her own right, and not just as the First Lady.

We also couldn't result chuckling the time she ignored the Prez -- on national TVu00a0 -- for dancing with a voluptuous belly dancer. The Commander-in-Chief has since learnt his lesson. And now knows that if he wants to show off his dance moves, he's going to need to check with Mom-in-Chief first.

She can walk the talk
The Harvard Law graduate knows how to hold an audience's attention, as last November's visit with
husband Barack Obama proved. Intelligent, articulate and positive, Michelle is smart enough to know that the quickest way to reach people is through their hearts. By urging the audience at St Xavier's College, Mumbai to "be tough" and "keep the President on his toes" she ensured that her husband was seen as 'of the people' and instantly 'accessible', successfully managing to strip him of at least some of his 'mystique' -- for better or worse.

She knows how to get jiggy wid it
It would be be a feat to have escaped footage of Mrs O jumping up to do an 'impromptu' jig with the students of Holy Name School, playing hopscotch with children at the Mumbai University, and her koli-dance movies with Obama, given the air time that (most) news channels dedicated to the effort. We want so desperately to believe that her 'moves' were not the result of extensive brainstorming sessions carried out by calculating image consultants, so we'll raise a toast to her ability to get Jiggy Wid It. It's just easier that way... Balle! Balle!

She brings finesse to the toughest job on the planet: Being a mother
Leave it to the Big 'O' -- Oprah Winfrey -- to let the world know how Mrs O wants to raise daughters Sasha and Malia: "as children, not as little princesses". A tall order in a world where she has over 90 people just managing "the residence" by which she means the White House -- a place where if "you want pie, there's pie. If something breaks, it's fixed. In an hour." Kudos to her for at least trying to keep things real for herself and
her family.
