In a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers found that of 203 travellers with asthma, 43% reported having an asthma attack during travelling. Here are some pointers for an asthmatic to keep in mind to have an enjoyable holiday.



Before departure
a) You could include the Breathometer in your travel kit. This device empowers you to measure your lung function daily.
b) You must carry a written plan about the initial management of asthma attack. It should include the medication doses, when to seek help and the emergency contact numbers of the family and the doctor.

Asthma Travel Kit for an Asthmatic Traveller
a) Peak flow meter
b) Spacer and face mask.
c) One course of oral steroid tablets
d) One course of an antibiotic in case of chest infections.

While Travelling by Road/Train
a) Keep the car/bus/train windows shut or use a scarf.
b) If the patient has cold-induced asthma, avoid switching on the car air-conditioning.
c) To arrange to travel during early morning or late evening when the air quality is better.
