You can't always have good guys. For a great gaming plot, you need an equally powerful, and mean antagonist

Jaison Lewis picks his top five anti-heroes of all time

Kefka Palazzo
Kefka Palazzo is the villain from Final Fantasy VI. Kefka starts out as little more than a background character. His persona is so laughable that the hero leaves him stranded in the desert instead of destroying him. This is all a ruse — by the time you encounter Kefka again, he has killed thousands of people and he gets you to help him, all because he is bored. He also ends up betraying his alliance members to become the God of Magic, the final boss of Final Fantasy VI. He is by far one of the most sadistic and psychotic antagonist in vide-ogames.

LeChuck
LeChuck is the antagonist of the Monkey Island series. While the bumbling idiot of a hero, Guybrush Threepwood, keeps defeating him, there is no stopping true evil appearing as a ghost, zombie and even a demon in various versions of the game. What made LeChuck a ghost before the game even began? Surprisingly, it was love for the Governor of Melee Island, Elaine Marley, who thwarted his advances by telling him to drop dead, which he did while searching for Monkey Island. The Secret of Monkey Island was made brilliant with LeChuck's evilness and awesome dialogues.

Bowser
Bowser completes Mario. Without Bowser's obsession of conquering the Mushroom Kingdom and kidnapping Princess Peach there would be no Mario rescuing her. In case you were wondering what Bowser is a turtle. But, unlike his turtle brethren, he is much larger, has horns and breathes fire like a dragon. Bowser isn't on this list for just being paired with Mario, he has one trait that most other villains are missing on this list and that is persistence. In case you want to play as Bowser, check out Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story available on the DS.

Purple Tentacle
A LucasArts alumnus, Purple Tentacle of Day of the Tentacle, was a happy tentacle corrupted by drinking industrial waste. He then grows a menacing unibrow, helpful appendages and a determination to "take on the world". The game happens over three timelines — a future where Purple Tentacle has succeeded, the present where he is hatching his evil plan and the past where one of the heroes is stuck. The game is bizarre and twisted and is all about Purple Tentacle. Though there isn't much dialogue for the evil tentacle, his intentions for the world are well rooted in the future where humans are pets and tentacles are everywhere.

GLaDOS
GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) is a funny and sinister artificial intelligence system that's trying to kill you. It was honestly the best part of Portal, and there is no way the game would have been as much fun if GLaDOS wasn't constantly making fun of you while you tried to destroy it. One of our favourites is, "There was even going to be a party for you. A big party that all your friends were invited to. I even invited your best friend the companion cube. Of course, he couldn't come because you murdered him. All your other friends couldn't come either because you don't have any other friends because of how unlikable you are."
