No, it does not make or receive calls, but Sony's SmartWatch is perhaps the most brainy thing we have worn on our wrists for a while. Definitely a licence to thrill, this one
Blame it on too many secret agent and sci-fi films of the ’70s and ’80s, but many people have always waited for the day when they would be able to use their phones from their wristwatches. And while there have been attempts made in this regard in the past, most notably from LG and Burg, Sony’s SmartWatch is by far the closest we have come to perfecting such a gadget.

The SmartWatch need not always be used on your wrist — the watch component can be clipped on to your clothing as well, a la the iPod Nano. But yes, it looks at its Bond-ish best when placed on the accompanying strap and slapped on to one’s wrist. With a 1.3 inch AMOLED display and at less than 30g with the strap, it weighs about as much as your regular timekeeper. However, this cool gadget comes into its own on being synced with your Android smartphone. At the time of writing, it worked best with Sony’s Xperia range of phones and a few others.
Synchronising happens over Bluetooth, and once you have grabbed the right apps from the Android Market, you can get email notifications and social network updates right on your wrist. You can even read mails, text messages and calendar alerts. Attachments and links, however, can’t be opened here, only on your handset.
And before you ask, you cannot make calls from it, although you can reject and mute them. You can also choose which song to play, although the playing will have to happen on the phone, once again. Our favourite apps were the Endomondo fitness app, which let us keep track of how far we had run or walked, and the weather app, which kept us abreast of the temperature and weather forecast.u00a0
Battery life is decent — it got through two days of hectic notifications and alerts, which did drain away some of the battery of the Sony Xperia S we had paired it with, but that was a small price to pay for turning so many heads — and heads will turn when you read your Facebook notifications off your wrist, we promise you.u00a0We wish it came bundled with every Xperia phone and worked with every Android device in town. Still, if you have an Xperia device, this is one accessory you will not regret investing in.u00a0Oh, and we almost forgot — it tells you the time as well.
