Akvarious Productions' latest play Internal Affairs takes a look at the idiosyncrasies of modern-day relationships
Today’s workplace has become a hub for forging new friendships, finding mentors and of course, having new relationships. Adhaar Khurana’s new play Internal Affairs takes a humourous look at the turn of events after two colleagues -- Sid and Riya -- have a one-night stand. The story starts off after the duo has spent the night together with each of them believing they are now in a serious relationship. They start introspecting and look at their past affairs, family ties and colleagues in a new light.

The play is loosely based on Scottish playwright Daniel C Jackson’s My Romantic History, which premiered in 2010 and also won an award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Khurana came across this piece when he was scouting for a play for the National Centre of Performing Arts’ Cheer festival two months ago.
He not only retained the same title but also stuck to the same script. The play ran to a packed house, but Khurana felt that to reach out to a wider audience, he needed to Indianise it. “I have changed the setting and included new characters. It’s a completely new production. So we titled it as Internal Affairs.”
The romantic comedy that earlier starred Priyanshu Painyuli, Hussain Dalal, Shikha Talsania and Shriya Pilgaonkar now also stars Dilshad Edibam-Khurana.
The director says, “As Shriya is travelling right now, Dilshad is essaying her role.” He adds the play’s major highlights are the main leads (Painyuli and Edibam-Khurana) interacting with the audience helping them know their respective points of view and two other actors (Dalal and Talsania), who essay a multitude of characters like the protagonist’s former lovers, office colleagues and parents.
“I portray diverse characters like Riya’s former boyfriend whom she reminisces about even today, Sid’s former flame’s lover, etc. Initially it was difficult for me to switch between so many roles. But it is immensely satisfying to essay diverse characters in one play,” Dalal signs off.
