That's British artiste of Indian origin Jay Sean's mantra for success. The 30-year-old, who first tasted UK chart success in 2003, with the Asian underground song, Dance With You (Nachna Tere Naal), tells us why it's important for him to produce his own music and the international female artiste he'd most like to collaborate with, close to the release of his fourth album

Singer, MC, rapper, beatboxer, music producer: Jay Sean is a man of many talents. Tasting his first bit of UK chart success in 2003 with band Rishi Rich's debut single, Dance With you, which fused R'n'B with bhangra, Sean decided to drop out of medical school to make his living in the music industry.

He would soon leave the band to pursue a career as a solo artiste. Over the years, he has continued to enjoy chart success, thanks to some high-profile music collaborations and a devoted fan following. He talks about the journey so far and his latest album, Hit The Lights, which releases later this month.

Do you feel your music has evolved with Hit The Lights?
Absolutely. I have always been categorised in the 'pop' bracket, and the genre itself has undergone such an intense metamorphosis that it would have been impossible for my music not to flow with it.

Do you think your Indian fans will be satisfied with the album?
I hope so! I am especially excited about its release here, because India's home to some of my most loyal fans!

You've collaborated with chart-topping artistes in the past, be it Li'l Wayne or Sean Paul. Who is next on your dream collaboration list?
Probably Jay-Z or Eminem, but as far as female vocalists go, Beyonc ufffd is my Number One choice!

Do you think establishing your own record label, Jayded Records, helped to further your dreams in the industry?
There's no question about it. It enabled me to make music that was truer to myself and more organic, which is important, because that fresh sound I had started out with began to get played out and gimmicky. I was always very clear that I needed to be writing great songs that were going to be remembered. It's not necessarily easy to do that when someone else is controlling your sound.

Can you see yourself collaborating with Indian artistes or incorporating more Indian elements into your music?
The beautiful thing about music is that it actually transcends all barriers and cultures, so yes, I'm definitely hoping to strike that chord with more Indian artistes and to learn more.

You were enrolled in the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Do you think if you hadn't become a musician you might have ended up a doctor?
Oh, absolutely! I always say I had two dreams and I just happened to choose the more unrealistic one. I had a bit of luck, which met opportunity, the combination of which is the very genesis of success!

How did the name Jay Sean come about?
Well, as Indians, we tend to have about a 100 pet names, so the name is a combination of two. 'Jay' was my nickname from an early age, while Sean comes from the Hindi word 'Shaan', another one of my nicknames, meaning 'pride'.

You have several performances lined up in India. What are you most looking forward to on the trip?
It's impossible to pinpoint one thing. All I know is, this time I plan on keeping a few days aside to take in some of the beautiful country and its life. And, of course, to gorge on some great food and authentic masala chai!

After featuring Bipasha Basu in one of your music videos, which Bollywood actress would you like to feature next?
Considering Priyanka (Chopra) is one of my closest friends, there's been talk about featuring her. Ultimately, it would just have to be whoever fits the song best.
