On the trail of the Holy Grail

Musical comedy Monty Python's Spamalot is a funny take on the adventures of legendary King Arthur and his Knights of Camelot

When Leila Alvares directs a play, it has to be a musical comedy. A self-proclaimed music lover, Leila says, "Life is so serious. Musical comedies entertain people and help them to loosen up.u00a0 The idea is to ensure that when people walk out of the auditorium, they should feel happy about life." This weekend, Leila is all set to make sure that you laugh your heart out through theu00a0 musical comedy, Monty Python's Spamalot.

The cast in a stage rehearsal

An adaptation of the British comedy series Monty Python and a Broadway production, this play is directed by Leila and is a spoof on how legendary British King Arthur and his knights of Camelot set out to search for the Holy Grail, a cup that is believed to have been used by Jesus at the Last Supper. The play is brought on stage by the Cause Foundation, a non-profit organisation that promotes local talent through its musical productions.
Leila shares that the play will chronicle the adventures encountered by the king and his followers on their journey but with a humorous twist.

The story begins when King Arthur sets out with his favourite squire Patsy to find men who can accompany them on their search for the Holy Grail. Ultimately, they gather a group of able men who join the them. However, the journey is not easy for Arthur as there are instances when he has to convince a peasant girl that he is the king while at other times he has to encounter guards, who are not interested in listening to the king but debate if two swallows can carry a coconut. The play, Leila says, is a parody of King Arthur's experience when he steps down from his throne and meets the common man.

However, Leila admits that though the production sticks to the original script, there are a few changes in terms of language and the length of the play. "The original play brings out British humour which may be below the belt for the Indian audience. So, I have made changes here and there," she confesses.

Leila refuses to name any character as her favourite as she says that each one has a streak of humour that makes it special. However, the strength of the play, she divulges, is a live band that will be playing on stage. "Live music is always an indispensable element for a musical. I have never used recorded tracks. With so many dancers and live bands, Monty Python's Spamalot will bring a smile on your face," shares Leila.
