A slice of the Pune that misses the eye

Phoenix Library, Sadashiv Peth

At Phoenix Library, you can browse through books as well as read what is written about the book, the author and related topics from the paper cuttings attached to the book.

It was established in 1959 by book lover JN Ponda, a native of Dahanu who gave up his job as a stenographer in Mumbai to move to Pune in 1958 and oversee the management of the library.

Over the last five decades, there have been several changes in terms of the selection of books, the number of members and the subscription rates. They started off with just 32 members but have 500 members today.

They recently shifted to Sadashiv Peth as their earlier locale in Wada is undergoing redevelopment soon. They stock books on topics such as fiction, general knowledge, science, autobiographies, biographies, wildlife, humour, sports, music, theatre, etc.

They also have issues of National Geographic and Life. The library is listed in the Limca Book of Records for their pasting of clippings from newspapers and magazines related to the book, subject or author. Ponda has pasted a total of 3 lakh clippings on different books while he has an additional 7 lakh that are yet to be pasted.u00a0
