No worries if you can't do more than foot tapping to the music at the turntable. Norah Zuniga Shaw, a choreographer and dancer, has formulated a visualisation project, Synchronous Objects to manifest the physical thinking into something meaningful, without having to dance.
The idea of visualising dance in some other form came as an answer to a dance choreographer William Forsythe's curiosity, "What else, besides the body, might physical thinking look like?"
Norah along with William Forsynthe and Maria Palazzi, who works as an animator collaborated on the project at the Ohio State University's Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design.
"We dive down to a dance, working with choreographers and dancers; we understand how it's organised and what its choreographic structures are.
Then we create data from the structures and make 3D animations, computer graphic and visualisations from the maps, graphs and a whole range of disciplinary perspectives working with dance knowledge," said Norah explaining how they work at the project.
With Synchronous Objects, the trio tries to explain hidden structure in dance using a set of objects by developing a circuit and directing a flow from dance to data and further from data to object. The resultant lines are an artistic endeavour in itself, says Norah.
"Choreography and dancing are two distinct and different practices. In the case that choreography and dance coincide, the former often serves as a channel for one's desire to dance.
One could easily assume that the substance of choreographic thought resides exclusively in the body. But is it possible for choreography to generate autonomous expressions of its principles without the body?" asks William.
Norah, who has grown up with dance and is the Director for Dance and Technology at the ACCAD, (dance and choreography being a disciplinary identity for her) will showcase her edge -cutting choreography at Goethe institute.
