This weekend, treat yourself to three enriching evenings of soothing Indian Classical music down at the Tata Theatre, NCPA
Music is one of those rare human elements which bind communities, societies, nationalities, even generations together. It is the most popular art form that has held society together since the moment it was created, spreading the same messages of life, love and so much more through a variety of genres, instruments, and singers. It is with this theme of immortal universality that the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) will be hosting its annual Bandish Festival of Legendary Composers at the Tata Theatre.

Bandish is essentially a type of song, a melodic composition in Hindustani Classical music. “What makes it unique is its expression of the raag, the crux that defines Indian music. It is poetry that tells a variety of stories, ranging from singing the praise of deities such as Krishna and nature, to reflecting on our own lives, our loves, losses, misery and happiness,” says Dr Suvarnalata Rao, Head Programming for Indian Music, NCPA. “Our festival will feature famous musicians such as Talat Aziz, Kaushiki Chakrabarty and others, who will perform compositions by a select number of legendary composers.
The beauty lies in how most of our performers share personal connections with the composers; hence, they serve as the best choices for performing these pieces. This personal connection is what the crowd loves, so we are generally always fully booked by the day of the event!”
