Taste Yum, which serves gourmet naan rolls and kebabs, is the new kid on the block on Carter Road

What is that one thing that plays obstacle between you and a delicious roll? Dripping gravy or bad packaging. We visited Tasty Yum two times last week and are still in awe of the double wrapping of foil and butter paper that ensured we relished a drip-free on-the-go bite, even during a bumpy rickshaw ride. Cushioned between Bollywood Cafe and Kareem’s on Carter Road, Bandra (West), Taste Yum had enough to take us there twice.



Chicken Tikka Roll


On our first visit, we gorged on a Paneer Roll (Rs 125) in white naan. Fresh as it can get, the naan melts in the mouth without asking for too much of your jaw and offers well-marinated flavours that enamour you. It was while we were transcending into a another world, however, that the rubbery paneer pulled the brakes on us, real hard. A total let down. The green chutney is served in a mini container and we couldn’t get enough of the yummy combination of coriander, lemon and green chillies.



Veg Tikka

Our second visit was on an overcast evening. This time, we ordered for a parcel of Veg Tikka (Rs 150) and a Chicken Roll (Rs 125). The order took 15 minutes as we sat on the red and white tables, starring at the honking cars and racing bikes. There is an inside seating for four which looks like fun with its orange walls, though it can get stuffy on a hot day.

On one of the tables outside, sat a foreigner, tears running down his eyes. The smile on his face was all it took to convince us that he was relishing his spicy morsel of curry and naan. Our wait for the parcel was worth it. Neatly packaged in a brown paper bag, this time, the Mix Veg Roll (Rs 125) in a wheat roti had a spicy filling dominated by crunchy cabbage and carrot. It’s one-of-its-kind in a city that is peppered with eateries that all claim to offer the ‘best’ roll.

A battalion of peas, however, let us down. The Chicken Roll turned out to be better than even Bade Miyan’s. The chicken was really tender, leaving a smoky tang on the tongue and a spicy burn on the lips. Warning — the weak-hearted should request a medium-spicy serving.

What Taste Yum has got right is its marinated masala and filling. We would revisit it for its simple yet bang-on flavours and fresh ingredients. The eatery will soon start home delivery, and we only hope that by then the paneer is tender.
