There's an inherent sense of romance (and excitement) that a radio set evokes even in the age of live streaming, podcast and smart watches. And, this was amply demonstrated when we ordered for Saregama's newly launched Carvaan, a radio cum music player, to our office. Compact, cutesy and portable, it made rounds to almost every table.
The cream coloured digital player - also available in electric blue - comes preloaded with 5,000 golden classics. Divided into categories like artistes (Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Gulzar, and Kalyanji Anandji, among others) mood (sad, happy, ghazal) and Ameen Sayani's Geetmala, it also has the option to tune into FM. The good part is you can also enjoy your personal collection of songs by plugging in a USB drive or streaming songs from your phone to the Carvaan via Bluetooth. The range of songs is exhaustive. Some we could hum along, rest were a revelation. Also, you can select each category by turning a jog-dial. So, with a turn of the knob, you can switch between Manna Dey classics to soulful Sufi tracks - all in their original versions. There are no ads to kill the moment. A bummer, however, is that there's no pause button. You have directly switch it off.
What also works in favour of the radio is its neat appearance, and its feather weight. However, what is slightly disconcerting is its price, R5990, which we think is a bit steep. However, if one is willing to loosen purse strings, it can be a worthwhile gift purchase for somebody who trips on retro music.
PRICE: Rs 5,990
